What is the Bay Area Maya Festival?

The Bay Area Maya Festival, a single-day festival on the Mission Campus of the City College of San Francisco (CCSF), shares with the community the ancient knowledge and the contemporary concerns of the Maya community. It is the only event in the Bay Area that brings together Maya people across various Maya regions, languages, and traditions–including Yucatec, Mam, Kʼicheʼ, and more. The festival aims to unify people across Maya traditions and educate the community.

The festival offers workshops on traditional Maya practices such as weaving and traditional dress; presentations on the Maya calendar and indigenous perspectives; and sessions on contemporary Maya art and literature. Additionally, festival workshops on earth healing, social justice and immigrant rights explore and address the impact of pressing issues such as the climate crisis, forced migration, globalization, housing, employment, economic opportunity and large-scale societal change on Maya peoples, territories, and livelihoods.
